Gaelic Song from the Isle of Lewis - Thainig na Meirlich anns an Oidhche

This song was written after watching the John Pilger documentary "Stealing a nation." The programme (which you can find on-line) is about the forced expulsion of the people of Diego Garcia by the British Government in the 1960s and 70s to make way for an American air-force base. Many of the people were dumped in the slums of Mauritius. The documentary exposes the cynical duplicity of politician...

The melody for this song is known as "Lullaby to James" and was written by Ian Crichton (1934-1999) - a well known composer of Ceol Beag, originally from the Point district of Lewis - it was written for his nephew James. The tune was originally published in Ian's book "Puirt a Eilean leodhais (book 1)". The melody is still in copyright and it is used here with permission.

A song about the many happy, care-free summer days spent in childhood wondering the wild places of the island - the moors, forests, hills and beaches, fishing, rambling and camping.

The Sgoth ("An Sgoth Niseach" in Gaelic) is a traditional fishing skiff with a dipping-lug rig and a lateen sail. It is particularly associated with the district of Ness on the island of Lewis in the Outer Hebrides of Scotland. The Sgoth is a large open boat, typically around 33 feet long, although smaller sizes were also made. It is clinker built and, like the Yoles and Sexerns of the Northern...
Music from the Isle of Lewis - The Marybank Jig
Переглядів 3,3 тис.11 років тому
This jig is a tribute to the village, just outside Stornoway, where I grew up. The township was named after Mary Elizabeth Frederica Mackenzie (1783 - 1862), eldest daughter of the 1st Baron Seaforth and one of the last of their line. She is said to be the "hooded lady" of Coinneach Odhar's prophecy. The Seaforths (hereditary chiefs of the clan Mackenzie) sold the island to Sir James Matheson i...

A love song of sorts - about an amorous liaison between an islander and a foreign woman. As can be heard in the recording, it may also be played as a pipe tune. The photographs are taken around the island.

The Harris Hills in the Outer Hebrides may not be as high or outwardly spectacular as the Cuillins, but their geological origin is much more ancient - and their weathered and uncompromising aspect, together with their unspoilt remoteness, gives them a feeling of other-worldliness, timelessness and solitude. The North Harris Range (which includes the Uig and Park hills in Lewis) was intruded int...
Gaelic Song from the Isle of Lewis - Cagar na Gaoithe
Переглядів 6 тис.12 років тому
This song was originally conceived as a sort of chant to the power and mystery of nature. Partially inspired by the old invocations collected by Alexander Carmichael and songs like the Manx "Gheay Jeh'n Aer" - a song which incidentally also mentions the deity "Shony" famous in Ness. The photographs were taken in various places around Lewis.
Gaelic Song from the Isle of Lewis - An Clachan

This song was inspired by the many deserted villages around the islands. In particular a small settlement on the Pentland road near Stornoway on the Isle of Lewis. The village is situated above where the Pentland and Achmore roads branch, near loch Vatandip. On the OS map, it is on a hillside named "Ben Hulabie." An old acquaintance, originally from the district of Ness (Chirstidh Pluc, Manner ...
Stornoway Castle Grounds, Isle of Lewis (with Gaelic Song)
Переглядів 5 тис.12 років тому
Lady Lever Park, also known as The Stornoway Woods, Gearraidh Chruaidh in Gaelic or universally to native islanders as "The Castle Grounds" was planted using native and exotic trees in the 1840s and 1850s by Sir James Matheson around his newly built Lews Castle residence on the Isle-of-Lewis in the Outer Hebrides. It was sold by him to Lord Leverhulme who, in turn, gifted it to the people of th...
This is an important part of history. Thanks for recording it and keeping the story alive.
Absolute classic, pumping out of my soundsytem
Who is playing on accordian? Wonderful accompaniment.
Just myself - I played the instruments and wrote the music. Thanks for the comment.
@@CohaaShawe You are very talented. Thank you for keeping alive this important ancient Celtic style of music.
Clachan? As in the “Stone of Clachan”?
Means "stones" but also "village" (clach is stone singular)
@@CohaaShawe I used to live in the wee cottage at Clach an Trushal 😄 the one with the huge standing stone close to it.
Absolutely intoxicating for me, so atmospheric and strange, but music and language of my people
I expected more under the title Music from the Hebrides, not a continual drawl of one pipe
What a Beautiful video and music I was on Harris a good few years ago and enjoyed the best strawberries I've ever tasted We bought them south of Tarbert I loved The Golden Road Finns Bay Rodel and of course the fantastic Luskintyre Beach it's the most Stunning island and thanks for inspiring me to get moving and go back Cheers
So beautiful! Thank you! Do you have a facebook page...? ❤
Hi there - not that organised I'm afraid - perhaps I'll set one up soon!
Hi there, I would be interested in using this piece of music for a TV programme that I am working on. Could you get in touch with me regarding this on karenohare@7wonder.co.uk as soon as possible? Many thanks, Karen
My name is McLeod and I am a descendant of McLeods from the Hebrides who came to Australia several generations ago. I love the music.
who is the composer and when was it written?
Hello Katherine. It's not very old - I wrote it - but it's written in the old traditional style which is still alive here.
love it
Lyrics?
Hi Elizabeth, I'm afraid my written Gaelic leaves something to be desired - so I never wrote them down. If there's particular words you want clarified though, send me a message.
Alas my spoken Gaidhlig is just as lacking, was hoping to learn how to sing this!! Mòran taing
Beautiful song. Do you know where I could find the lyrics?
I don't have the words written down I'm afraid, I find Gaelic difficult to write down properly - however if there is a particular part that is unclear from the audio let me know and I'll have a go at writing that bit down.
nice! greetings from greece
This is great music. It sounds very old. Did you compose it or is it from an old folk tune?
+Katherine A. Budd Glad you like it - it's a tune, but composed in the traditional style.
Love it! Have you ever heard Mary MacMaster? She does an Irishwasher Womans song called Thorgrainn, Thorgrainn. There are accent marks somewhere there not sure where. This songs kinda reminds me of her song!
+AlbaWind MacTavish-Blair Yep, I have heard her, very nice although I haven't heard that particular song. Glad you like the song.
There wouldn't happen to be a English version? I remember growing up hearing something similar to this, it's all very cloudy in my mind, something about a holy island?
Charlotte Murray Hi Charlotte. No at present there is not an English version of this song. I'm not sure about the English one you heard - there are quite few other songs on similar themes around.
It doesn't need the background music!
Lovely to see images of my family's old airidh (at 1.14 on this video and at 0.41 on thainig na meirlich) My grandparents still moved out there for the whole summer up until about the early 60s, along with many other families from Point - it was a busy place! There always seemed to be plenty of children to play with during the summer holidays, and quite how both grandparents, uncles, aunts, and an assortment of grandchildren all found the space to live in the one little airidh is difficult to imagine now. Wonderful, happy, fun-filled days, great memories.
Thank you for the support! It's an original - composing Gaelic songs and tunes is a little hobby in my spare time. You can hear some of the others on the rest of the channel.
This is awesome! Is this a traditional song or an original composition?
Yes, I'm from the island, although I left to go to college and then work when I was 18. However my mother still stays there and I enjoy my visits home.
Are you from Lewis. My grandmother was from Port nan Giùran and I still have a number of relatives there (many are related as you must know). I went there when I was 10 and always wanted to go back. No place like it on earth.
Its one of my favourite places on a calm summers day or evening.
Enjoyed views from the Golden Road
I'm glad that the pictures and song revived old and pleasant memories. I have similar ones - but a little later on.
I hav e walked with many a sweatheart in the Gearraidh Chruaidh and now I am getting older, sorry, not getting, have got older.Memories remain and how sweet the memories. Thank you for reviving these memories and I can only say I was blessed by God to have been part of that wonderful Hebridean childhood
Thank You. Glad you enjoyed it.
Cracking video, well done :)
Thank You, I'm glad you enjoyed it.
Nice vid,Some real nice views in the grounds!!
No problem.
Thank you for uploading this with the pictures. They do Lewis justice.
Thank you, I'm glad you like it. The singer is Frances MacLeod from Lewis.
Who is that singing? The song is lovely. :)
